It sounds like the series called Animorphs. I don't know what number though. I remember that happening to me once,too. I read one of the books, I think it was the first one. And then, like forever later I read it again and it was really familiar, then when it got to a particular part in the book, I remembered why it seemed so familiar to me. I had been looking for it for a long time and then I found it....yup, that's what happened. Well, anyways, I hope you find the book you're looking for. Oh, if you want to know, the author is K.A. Applegate.

Tried "Anamorphs"? Most of their covers are like that...
