I read the last response which makes me think I have a different idea of the meaning.... however, when you "opt in" you're given an option to be involved in something or not. If you "opt in" to an email list, for example, it means that you've been given the option to be a part of it and you are accepting the invitation. This is why when you get spam emails you can click a link to "opt out". Hope this helps! :)
