I spent 100 dollars to buy 7 pounds of flour and 8 pounds of sugar (I
own a bakery) yesterday. Last month I spent 30 dollars to buy 2 pounds
of flour and 4 pounds of sugar. But I do not know how much a pound of
each ingredient (x for flour, y for sugar) costs.
100=7x+8y, 30=2x+4y (60=4x+8y)
Solution: 40=3x, x=40/3 dollars/pound, y=(100-7 40/3)/8 d/p

What is the solution to this system....

f = cost of flour
s = cost of sugar

100 = 7f + 8s (1)
30 = 2f + 4s (2)

(1) - 2(2)

40 = 3f
f = $40/3 per pound

30 = 2(40/3) + 4s
30 = 80/3 + 4s
90 = 80 + 12s
12s = 10
s = $5/6 per pound

s=sugar, f=flour

7f+8s=100
2f+4s=30 multiply by -2
-4f-8s=-60
7f+8s=100 add
3f=40
f=40/3=$13.33/lb
2f+4s=30 substitute f=40/3
80/3+4s=30
80+12s=90
12s=10
s=10/12=0.83/lb
check
7f+8s=100 substitute f=40/3 & s=5/6
7*40/3+8*5/6=100
280/3+20/3=100
300/3=100
100=100
flour costs $40/3 pounds
sugar costs $5/6pounds

You have the solution.

x=40/3 = $13.33 per pound for flour
y= (100 -7*13.33)/8 = 84 cents = $.84 per pound for sugar

Check: 7*13.33 + 8*.84 = 93.31+6.72 =$100.03
2*13.33 + 4*.84 = 26.66 + 3.36 = $30.02

x=the cost of flour
y= the cost of sugar

7x+8y=100
2x+4y=30

7x+8y=100
-4x-8y=-60
----------------
3x= 40
x= 40/3

2(40/3)+4y=30
80/3+4y=30
4y= 10/3
y= 5/6

Flour cost is about $13.33
Sugar cost is about $.83
