The Republicans are able to motivate their voting base through talking points and hot button issues better than the Democrats are.
Not to mention that social conservatives are generally more likely to want to tell everyone else how to live than social liberals are, so they're more likely to vote.
Edit: Oops, looks like the majority of us thought you were talking about American Democrats. Sounds like you guys in the U.K. might be in the same boat we are here!

The tables have changed by the choice of the Conservative electorate. It may seem that the Liberals have won but in fact the Conservatives have won. The Conservatives when in the majority did not do what they were elected to do so the Conservatives took them out of power, not the liberals. By the way not all Democrats are liberals any more than all Republicans are Conservatives. Thus the change. George Bush is not a Conservative he is a moderate, he has compromised way too much.

What you have to understand is that Liberals do not get a lot of the popular vote unless they hide the fact that they are liberals. The people in the country have been voting against liberal ideas for many years now and will continue to do so as long as they continue to hold radical ideas which do not appeal to the majority in the country. They have tendency to demean or discount popular opinion. Take the last presidential election for example. The primary reason John Kerry lost is because he failed to realize that security was the most prominent issue on the minds of voters. Instead he presented statements like "I have a plan, but I can't tell you what it is until I am elected", or the ever popular "I voted for it before I voted against it". Even in the last mid term people did indeed vote against the Republicans, but they did not vote for liberals. As long as liberals continue to embrace every radical idea and group out there while holding the attitude that they are superior in mind and deed to the average person they will continue to lose at the ballot box..
Edit: I speak purely based on American politics. I do know what is on the mind of the average Brit, nor do I feel I have any say whatsoever as to who they should vote for or why.

What? You didn't see that the dems took the House and the Senate last November? As far as the Presidency is concerned, they has won it in the past and will win it in the future, probably in 2008, after two more years of Bush.

Nothing there is NOTHING to make of them, they are an empty vessel, they are their to give the impression of choice amongst the voters of the UK. Now we really only have 2 parties to vote for, since the Labour party is no more, we have the Conservatives and New Labour, led by Tony Blair MP = I'm Tory Plan B (anagram), SO WE HAVE NO CHOICE (phew)

What do I make of Lib Dems? Nothing, but they might make a good pate on crackers. And Kennedy would already be fermented and might be especially tasty.

It just seems like they have more of the popular vote because they blow their hot air more than the Reps. Clearly, they don't since they can't win elections!
