the guy above has it correct... Rest, Ice Compression, and Elevation

It is very important that when you have a sports injury to use RICE within the first 4 hours after the injury has occurred. This period is when the most swelling and inflammation will occur.

Be sure that you follow all of the letters of the mnemonic, especially REST! Most people like to ignore this one.

With Ice - the rule of thumb is 20/20 - 20 minutes on and 20 minutes without ice... repeat at least 4 times per day in the first 48 hours

Compression - use an ACE or other such elastic bandage to apply compression to stop swelling of the limb / joint. be sure that after you apply the bandage that you check that circulation is not cut off.

Elevation - elevate the injured area above the level of the heart... this is a GREAT excuse for being lazy and laying on the couch.. .just make sure to use to use the arms of the couch or pillows to elevate the injured area...

If after a couple of days swelling and pain is not reduced, see a physician... if you see obvious deformity immediately after the injury go in right away.

ALSO... This is HUGELY IMPORTANT!!!! NO HEAT in the first 48-72 hours after an injury! This will only prolong the inflammation and pain associated with the injury, slowing recovery.
