Triangle with x as adjacent, 8 as hypotenuse, and no number for opposite . the angle is 40 and there is a right angle. how do i calculate x using sin cos or tan? i am using a scientific calculator so can u please tell me what buttons on it to press?

Sin(A)=a/c
cos(A)=b/c
and
tan(a)=a/b
and it better be a right angle triangle or all bets are off.

also since you are using a calculator make sure you are computing in degrees( deg) and not radians (rad).

a - apposite of angle side (in this case it is angle A)
b -adjacent to the angle A side
c- the hypotenuse

to compute b = 8 [x] cos (40)
1. enter 40
2. press cos (you will see 0.7660...)
3. press [x] key or [*]
4. enter 8
5. press [=] (you will see 6.12835...)

Hi, x = 8 cos 40

so type 8 x cos40 =

This comes from using SOHCAHTOA

Where in this case we are using A and H, adjacent and hypotenuse, so Cos (angle) = A / H

I have no calculator so im not sure what the exact answer comes out as.

I assume that the 40° is the angle between the hypotenuse and side x

cos x = x / 8
x = 8 cos 40 = 8 x 0.766 = 6.128

cos 40° will depend upon what calculator you use. It may be that you press 40 and then cos or cos then 40----experiment until you get 0.766!

Draw it out:

A triangle with a hypoteneuse of 8 and an angle of 40 has another angle of 50.

x/8 = cos(40)
x = 8 * cos(40) = 6.1283555449518242816191412044433

Draw a triangle with B = 90 degrees, A = 40 degrees and C = 50 degrees. AC = hypotenuse = 8 and AB =x.
Then x/8 = sin 50 [side opposite over hypotenuse = sine]
x= 8sin 50 =6.128

BC/8 = cos50 [side adjacent over hypotenuse = cosine.
BC = 8cos50 = 5.142

To get x above type 8, then X, the sin, then 50 then ).Then press enter for answer.

remember chief SOHCAHTOA

you are looking for the adjacent. use the cos
cos 40=x/8
x=8*cos 40
x=6.1

the buttons depend on the particular calculator you are using.

if you want the side opposite use sin
sin 40=y/8
y=8*sin 40
y=5.1

first you have to know the trig function: SOHCAHTOA

So cos = adjacent / hypoteneuse

cos 40 = x / 8
x = 8 cos 40

On calc:
[make sure you're in degrees and not radians...]

40, cos , multiply, 8

that should do it.

x/8 = cos(40)
x = 8 * cos(40) = 6.128

SOHCAHTOA baby!

cos 40 = X/8

X= 8 x (cos 40)

hang on - am I doing your homework for you? ya little....
