The vertical bar symbol is right next to the brackets on your computer, directly above the ENTER key.

| -1 + 1 | = | 0 | = 0 and | -1 | + | 1 | = 1 + 1 = 2,
so | -1 + 1 | is not equal to | -1 | + | 1 |

L.H.S = [ x + y] ....Consider x= 5 and y = -3 ......so ...
L.h.s = [ 5 +(-3)] = [ 5-3] = [2] =2

R.h.s = [x] + [y] = [5] + [-3] = 5 + 3 = 8
(Absolute value of -ve no. is +ve)

So, L.h.s is not equal to R.h.s ...
Hence the above statement is false .....

Have fun !!
