You sound like a lady with a lot of sense, there are so many maniacs on the road these days. Some people just have no patience and some that just don't know how to drive a very bad combination. Just take it with a pinch of salt, and smile the next time it happens it infuriates them even more!

People in this day and age are just too stressed. They've got too much on their plates. We live by the clock. We schedule too much in our day. We work too much. Then we play like we work (too hard always with a goal in mind rather than just for the enjoyment), and we never, NEVER just sit and do nothing. This is a lost art that people born before in previous generations knew how to do. Back then, it was okay to wile away the hours contemplating the sunset. Nowadays, we have to schedule the time to contemplate the sunset in, and while we're sitting there, we probably feel guilty because there should be 20 other things we should be doing instead.
BTW I recently moved to a place where the culture is totally different than the US. I have never seen road rage here. I have seen people act stupid driving (young and impulsive). But never seen road rage. Here, people don't believe in being on time. To be an hour late is expected.

Road rage isn't just from the drivers in the vehicle either, sometimes the passengers are more rude and have hands free to give gestures and often do. I think may be we live in a highly stressed world with so many people wanting to get to the same place at the same time, with no time or patience to wait their turn.

I don't think this problem is just to do with road rage. People seem to have less time for each other. We are in a period of self-centered living. This is probably due to the erosion of religion and traditional values. You're not the first to be concerned by these things, but hopefully something will come along in the near future and restore some of this loss in faith.

I think there are a few factors at work here:
1. Helpless/out of control. Human beings hate to feel helpless and out of control, despite the fact that most of us spend most of our time in that space. There's a sense of it being someone else's fault.
2. Anonymity. I doubt that Joe Sixpack would cut someone off and give them the finger if Joe Sixpack knew who it was he was insulting. It's much easier to be mean to a stranger.
3. It shouldn't be this way. For me I keep thinking, when I'm sitting and not moving on the freeway, that a bunch of jerks back in the beginning of the 20th century DOOMED us to this existence by KILLING public transportation. The government allowed the American auto companies to dictate how roads and rails would be funded.

The only time I get upset with other drivers is when they do something really stupid that could get me hurt or dead. Like changing lanes when there is not enough room and without signaling. Drivers of trucks who do not even look before changing lanes or the one that really gets me is the guy who pulls out in front of you when you are doing 60 and decides to do 40 and if you hit him it is your fault. There are many other stupidities I see every day but they do not make me angry . I am sure you see some drivers who need to revisit drivers ed classes.

Because some people need to vent and that is they're only outlet. Ignore em and know you're a good driver no matter what anyone else thinks. I'm sure they've caused road rage with others as well....

I used to get road rage terribly until I had a really bad experience on the road in SoCal. My husband and I were driving and a truck full of black guys cut me off, so I cut them back off. They got really REALLY pissed and then started throwing things at my car, calling me the "c" word and threatening to kill my husband. I sped the hell up and got away from them - and I will never road rage again.

becuz some of the drivers out there love 2 dominate. they love 2 release their anger out on anyone they see fit. sometimes it wasn't even u that got them mad. i've heard cases where they had just got fired, or their relationship just ended badly and when they went driving that just started to take it out on tha otha drivers. but then there are times where it is the victim, but it's mostly becuz the victim didn't see the otha driver and then th@ otha driver starts beeping and shouting profanities out the window that would be joan rivers blush.

the society we live in is much more hectic and fast paced so people have less patience. i'm a professional driver and have to avoid bad drivers every day .the standards are not high enough and the driving test does not cover enough.
