The easiest thing is to multiply through with the least common denominator (LCD) so that you get rid of the factions, once you combine terms.

Combine terms -
2/X + 2/3X = 4 - 5/2 (or 3/2)

In this case, multiply both sides by 3X, getting
6 + 2 = (3/2)(3X) or 8 = 9X/2 or X = 16/9.

Checking 2(9)/16 + 5/2 = 4 - 2(9)/(3)(16) or
18/16 + 5/2 = 4 - 18/48
(18+40)16 = (192-18)/48
58/16 = 172/48 which is true.

This might sound silly, but it really worked for me. I went to Walgreens (or any store like it) and bought a workbook for math. They have all levels, just buy one and work through it. If you learned it in school it will come back to you with a little practice. You just need to go back to the basics - start with an introduction to algebra work book, or an introduction to fractions book. They are about $3.00 each (at least the ones I got were) and easy to work through.
Good Luck.

Here are some resources, for when you have time to do some "studying" on your own. Your daughter can also use these sites and ask questions.
