Well pretty much all of Orlando is a, as you say, "tourist trap." To escape the typical tourist locations, you'll want to head either south of Orlando to Sarasota or Sannabel Islands, or North to Tallahassee and Jacksonville. Near Tallahassee is an island called St. George Island. It is off the pan-handle and is absolutely breathtaking! They have great restaurants, shops, and hotels on the island - but it is small overall and not very crowded. More of a locals kind of place.

But there are also a lot of things in Orlando that, while they may be a big tourist hot spot - they are that way for a reason and shouldn't be missed. Walt Disney World, Islands of Adventure, Airboat Rides to see Gators, Sea World, and Kennedy Space Center are a just a few of the many attractions Central Florida has to offer.

Was there a few years ago - it was absolutely awesome. Its a one day pass, includes lunch, and there is plenty to do when it is not your turn to swim with the dolphins. Have a great time.
