Dead and gone. The Selective Service System still exists on paper, but it isn't doing anything except wasting a small amount of taxpayer money. The military does not need cannon fodder -- it needs people who can operate and maintain today's complex weapons systems, and you cannot obtain such by pulling them off the street for a two-year hitch: you have to hire them, pay them what they are worth, and keep them for years.

it only exists in Europe, and only on the continent now, Britain got rid of it in 1957, Britain, America and Canada are the only three nations in NATO that do not have conscription.
