The trick to this question is the bottle is the cost of the cork plus an extra dollar. The cork does NOT equal the total minus $1.
let the cork = C. therefore the bottle equals C + 100.
105 = C + C + 100 --> 2C + 100 = 105 --> 2C = 5. Therefore, the cork costs 2 1/2 cents.

The bottle costs $1.00 more than the cork; that means the cost of the total ($1.05) is made up of the cost of the cork C + the cost of the bottle, C+1.00.
C + (C+1.00) = 1.05
2C +1.00 = 1.05
2C=1.05-1.00
2C=0.5
C=0.5/2
C=0.025
To see how this procedure does not produce the right answer, do the same thing with a quarter and a nickel.
A Quarter and a nickel add up to .30. The quarter is worth .25 more than the nickel, so what is a nickel worth? Q is quarter and N is nickel.
N + (N+.25) = .30
2N + .25 = .30
2N = .30 - .25
2N = 0.05
N= 0.025 (2 and half cents)
You know a nickel is not 2 and a half cents!
And:
Q is 25 cents more than N
Q+N=30 (all of the information for this problem is the same)
Q+N=30
Q-N=25
Adding the two equations,
2Q = 55
Q = 55/2
Q = 27.5
You know that a quarter is not worth 27.5 cents.
The answer is that the cork costs a nickel. x+1.00 = 1.05 and that means x must be 0.5.

The cork costs 2.5 cents.
B + C = 1.05 (Together they cost 1.05)
B - C = 1.00 (The bottle costs 1.00 more than the cork). So, add the two equations together
2B = 2.05 So, B = 1.025
Substitute into the second equation and
1.025 - 1.00 = C = .025, or 2.5 cents.

Let cost of the cork be X,
then bottle cost $ 1 more, so the cost of bottle is $1 +X..
total of bottle plus cork is X+ 1+X= 1+2x
1+2x= 1.05
=> 2X=1.05-1
=> 2X=.05
=>X=.025
Bottle = 1+x=>1+.025= 1.025
Cork= .025

.025 cents is the cost of the cork.
Cork=(.025)
Bottle=(Cork)+1.00)= 1.025
Bottle + Cork = 1.05
1.025 + .025 = 1.05
