It depends on what you are buying. Ebay is a good place for an informed consumer. As an example, if you want to buy a disk drive you should know the difference between SATA and PATA, know what RPMs are considered slow or fast, and know what size buffers are reasonable. I have seen listings which look good at first glance but are missing something which an uninformed buyer might not notice.

In addition listings from sellers with several bad ratings, I would also be wary of listings that are selling something for a price that just seems too cheap. Lastly, if you are expecting a warranty you better make sure you will get one - some manufacturers will not transfer them.

Having said that, as long as you know what you want and read the whole listing, you should be fine. My laptop and PDA came from ebay. I've bought 40 different items and I've been a bit disappointed once - I bought an inexpensive product to try it out and it didn't work all that well - but had I bought the same item from an online store it still wouldn't have worked and it wouldn't have been as cheap.

Good luck.

I think the people who say it is bad are those who try to buy and sell on ebay without really understanding how everything works. Once you understand it you can't beat it for making extra money,

I've been selling on ebay for a little over 2 years and I still remember how hard it was just starting out. You can get a free ebay success kit that has everything you need to get started right at: http://smart-money-help.com/free-ebay-kit . The information in that kit will answer every question you have...and a lot more. I highly recommend you get it before you get too far into the ebay thing.

Boy oh boy, I could say sooo much, but I'll keep it simple.

Ebay is like any other market - you can get ripped off but you can also pick up bargains. You need to read the listings carefully, and check people's feedback carefully before you consider making a bid. Use your common sense - if someone is selling "Genuine Rolexes" for £1, you can bet it's either a scam or the watch is stolen. If however, the seller is a powerseller with 325325 positive ratings, it may just be genuine.

As for selling, just make sure you get payment before you post the item and always get proof of postage. If the item is worth more than the level of insurance cover you get with regular postage, ask the buyer if they want insurance.#

I've only been ripped off twice in over 250 transactions, and that's not too bad. When I have lost money, I've only lost a little, so it's not mattered too much.

Ebay is an excellent place to buy and sell things. U just have to be carefull when buying. Check the user rating, make sure its from a reliable source. Usually Call if theres a number, or e-mail before buying. I have bought countless items off ebay and have never been unsatisfied. I have not yet sold anything on there, but my family, and friends do all the time. Its just a great way to get or get rid of whatever you want fast and effortlessly.

I love ebay. I buy and sell. As long as you are careful there really isn't a problem.

Make sure you read everything in the ad before you buy anything. Check the sellers feedback carefully. It is also a good idea to save a copy of the ad so you can reference it later. I only pay through PayPal. It is safer that way.

When selling, make sure to ship in a traceable fashion or they can say they never received the item. Make sure you truthfully and completely describe the item and save a copy of that ad as well.

With those precautions, you should be fine.
