All things considered, it would take a minimum of 6 months to be granted a divorce from the time of filing. Other issues such as property and children can cause delays. Living apart is just that- living apart. A legal separation is when the divorce proceedings have been initiated but the decree has not been issued yet.
The "right time" to file for divorce is when the couple has tried marriage counseling, etc. to no avail. Some people just refuse to grow up.

If he says he is divorcing his wife if he is serious, it only takes moving out, on the way stop off and file for divorce. It takes just as long as what your state waiting period is, just a matter of time,

it all depends on the reason for wanting a divorce. a separtion is usually used as a break or trial period to see if the parties can reconcile. if your friend believes reconciliation may be possible then sure - go for a trial separation. If not then go straight for a divorce. shorter,, and cleaner end.

depends on the state you live in. SOme states require that you live seperate from your spouse for 1 year.

As for the steps?
