To help clarify for the benefit of the asker, in the UK we have various secretaries of state. Each is responsible for overseeing specific areas of government.
As a previous answer has illustrated, we have Secretaries of state for Defence, for "Homeland" (i.e. Home secretary), Education, Health, Foreign Affairs, Work and Pensions etc.
In the US however, their "Secretary of State" is the person who acts as the representative of the US Govenrment abroad, being the keynote figure behind the implementation and communication of US foreign policy.
The closest equivalent therefore in the UK system is our Foreign Secretary, currently Margaret Beckett.

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is a modern Department of State, at the heart of Government. It is headed by the Secretary of State for Defence, the Rt. Hon. Des Browne, MP, who is supported by three Ministers:
The Minister of State for the Armed Forces - the Rt. Hon. Adam Ingram MP.
The Under Secretary of State and Minister for Defence Procurement - Lord Drayson.
The Under Secretary of State for Defence and Minister for Veterans - Derek Twigg MP.
The two senior non-ministerial people in the department are:
Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup, the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) who is head of the Armed Forces and has command of military operations.
Bill Jeffrey, the Permanent Under Secretary (PUS) who is the department’s civilian head and has responsibility for policy advice, finance and administration.

We dont have such a title here, but my guess, the closest would be John Reid, our home Secretary, in charge of the Home Office. He looks after all the internal affairs of the country, or at least thats what he is supposed to do. : -))
