Unfortunately, yes, this is normal. Doctors still like to control the process. You can walk around for weeks dilated and have no contractions, etc. This is usually not a surefire way to determine when you will have the baby. Unless you have high blood pressure or a life-threatening illness/condition with the baby, I wouldn't let him induce you. If you aren't ready, even though you're 40 weeks, your labor might not progress and it could increase your chances of having a c-section. Since doctors tend to be a little impatient, they don't give your body enough time to do the work by itself. Personally I would decline and just let the baby finish 'baking'.
One thing they can do is strip your membranes or break your water. This could start contractions. If it doesn't, however, you run the risk of infection once our water is broken. Other artificial means of inducing labor include the use of PItocin, which can bring on contractions hard and fast in some people, often necessitating the need for an epidural. This in turn can cause labor to slow down, which according to doctors is called "failure to progress". Then they might do a section. Other drugs are Cervidil, which is like a suppository that they insert into the vagina, and Cytotec - which I would avoid like the plague. This is a very dangerous drug that should not be used to induce pregnant women because it can cause spontaneous uterine rupture even in women without pre-existing scars on the uterus.
Just have lots of sex and walk a lot if you want to try to get this baby to come on its own.

I was induced on my due date because i was not progressing at all and i had edema in my feet and legs like you would not believe and i was VERY uncomfortable. I did not even dialate to 1. The induction did not work and was sent home the next day and was told we would try again in 3 days. The day i was supposed to go back to get induced again my water broke, but i was STILL not progressing. Still no dialation. i ended up having a c-section. I think if you are not having any problems and you are not too uncomfortable, i would wait. Let the baby come when he/she wants to come.

Is there some very unusual medical complication which makes it dangerous to go any longer in your case?
If not then no, that is not normal or good.
- Your due date might be slightly off. It's just an estimate.
- Even if you are dilated a bit, your body might not be ready, so forcing it to go into labor early makes it more likely that you will end up with a c-section.
- Pitocin is hell. It gives you very strong contractions that are hard on your body and hard on the baby. It can cause the baby to go into distress and lead to a c-section. It's best to avoid it if you can.
- When you are induced, you will have to stay in bed and have continuous monitering as well as the IV. It is very uncomfortable to stay lying down when in labor. It is much easier to deal with contractions when up and moving. Even if you plan to have an epidural, they often won't give it to you until you've reached a certain dilation, and the doctor who gives them might not be available right when you want one, so you might have to deal with things naturally for quite a while while waiting.
In the end, it is your choice, not your doctors. Unless you have dangerously high blood pressure or preeclampsia or some other real need for induction, I'd put my foot down and say no in your case. It's safe to wait for up to about two weeks after your due date before you really need to induce to have the baby. Most women go into labor well before that time. First babies are usually at least a few days if not a week late though.

Probably because you are not progressing. You could be a 1 for a month. Usually they like to induce if the baby is big, or you are not progressing, or if there are other problems. I got induced a week after my date with my second and 3 weeks early with my third. My Dr. didn't want the baby to get bigger - I lucked out!
I wouldn't worry - be happy you don't have to wait - since you are only a 1 AND probably not effaced or thinned out, it could be well over your date if you went natural, especially since your date is just a couple days away.
Congrats!

Personally, _I'd_ find another doctor.
See:
http://parenting.ivillage.com/pregnancy/0,,jb56,00.html
"Many obstetricians want to induce labor when you exceed your due date by a set number of days, in the belief that prolonged pregnancy increases risk. As with dating the pregnancy, the evidence for inducing labor after a certain time past the due date isn't nearly as clear-cut as you might think, but that's another subject.) If induction were harmless, it wouldn't matter, but it's not. Among other adverse effects, inducing labor increases the odds of fetal distress during labor and cesarean section in first-time mothers, and mistiming the induction can result in a premature baby."
http://www.hencigoer.com/articles/elective_induction/
"Is elective induction safe and effective?
The Food and Drug Administration and the Physician’s Desk Reference, the bible of information on drugs, recommend against elective inductions.31,35 The FDA “disallows” it; the PDR says, “Since the available data are inadequate to evaluate the benefits-to-risks considerations, Pitocin [the trade name for oxytocin] is not indicated for elective induction of labor.”"
If I couldn't find another doctor, I'd ask a LOT of questions, and do a LOT of research. Doctors do NOT "always know best." Sometimes, they just want to go to Hawaii.

A scheduled induction is not normal unless there are reasons: a large baby, high blood pressure, etc. Most doctors only induce for medical reasons or if a woman goes past her due date. I would definitely ask why he is inducing. If it is a matter of convenience on his part, that is unacceptable. Good Luck

I got induce 3 times. My first one was 2 weeks late and my second was 3 days early and my third was on her due date and I was dilated at a 2. Yes that is normal. unless the baby is not ready.

Having not hassle-free artwork triggered is not sensible, fantastically consisting of your spouse being healthful!!!! Induction in consumer-friendly words causes unneeded rigidity on the toddler and then more effective oftentimes than no longer leads to a c-section. women folk were having children continually without the guidance of pitocin or different not hassle-free artwork inducing drugs, examine up on the numerous information by way of Hedgewitch and Frederique C, they both comprehend a lot and it would want to extremely open your eyes because it did mine. grant you with toddler the suitable commence achieveable learn, do no longer basically let a Dr allow you to comprehend what is going to take position I made that mistake and experience sorry about it now. good success to you, your spouse, and your little blessing.

I guess it would depend on whether or not you're having a normal, healthy pregnancy. I had a complication-free pregnancy and my doctor refused to induce earlier than one week past my due date (which sucked...i felt like I was going to explode). So yes...I would think that's a little strange. Either way, best of luck with your labor and delivery!!!
