It's very possible. I've seen plenty of documentaries on people who live secluded in the mountains and fend for themselves as far as food and water and basic necessities go. There's also a show that used to be on PBS called 'Frontier House' where three families are 'sent' to live in 1883 in Montana. It's pretty amazing.
There is always a part of the system we'll have to conform to, I think, because of laws and taxes and things like that, but it is possible to live within the system and still have an unusual (by today's standards) existence.
Society doesn't force us to conform, it is we who choose to:
"Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." ~ Romans 12:2

A certain degree of conformity is inevitable.
They key is to find the line that divides healthy compromise from subjugation, and stay on the freer side of it.

Absolutely nope...
You may think outside the box and have your own opinions.
Try to get real unbiased information like that on NPR or American Public Media.
Avoid the main stream, shopping at Walmart, don't follow "the pack" just because everybody does it.
Peace.

Hundreds of thousands do each day. We call them the homeless. When I was working down in KY, bunches of people lived out side the system... barter, etc.

I think it is possible to exist outside of the system, but very difficult to succeed.
