I think that if they taught black history in American history we would only take up a chapter, I agree with you about black history month. They give us the shortest month of February, it's like they want to get our history over with as soon as possible, like it's not important at all. They focus more on the negative aspects of or history like segregation and slavery (which was not our fault)instead of our great acheivements. People need to learn about segregation and slavery, but the positive aspects are just as important also.

i would love to do away with black history month, and incorporate black history in American text books. and not just the slave history. I would also throw in the buffalo soldiers, Tuskegee airmen and speak more of the cities that were built before, during and after reconstruction.
I'm sick of black history month being about MacDonald's calendars, Harriet Tubman and George Carver. There was a lot more than that, and i think a chapter or two not all about slavery would help everyone.
edit: also, watch out for "they" black history month was conceived of by black leaders at the time, and February was specifically chosen

Stop your whining and trying to get reparations - it will never happen! As anyone can tell you, just because it's written in a history book doesn't make it real or legitimate. Take the history of the South for instances. Most people wrongly think that Southerners fought the WBTS for slavery - WRONG! Just go back and read newspapers and speeches from the time and you'll see they fought for other reasons, like limited government. But, look how it's taught in schools - that Southerners were evil slave owners and that the righteous, perfect, Abe Lincoln and the North saved the day. All I have to say is where will it end? The American Indians have more to complain about than Afro-Americans any day.

It is! I don't know where you go to school but I had it in my history. And the community chose it's own history month try not to read into the flahs of choice, get involved with groups to push this issue if it's such a concern. I did not have one class on Native americans so what does that tell ya?

What you realized in February become neither precise nor finished. Having that classification as an non-compulsory is a good ingredient. human beings could no longer be forced to waste their time on such foolishness. The older historic previous books provided a much more effective precise image.

Hey man im hispanic and i think black people should be happy that they teach kids in school about black people during february, im FAR from racist but i couldnt facking stand being forced to learn about some black people that i didnt care about for a whole month =(, I bet the poster of this question or half of the people in america dont know when Hispanic Heritage Month is... Its in september and i dont know about other states but in NJ we NEVER learned about Hispanics, I mean i dont care if they dont teach other people about my race, but just dont force me to learn about other races for a whole month... I have to say that learning about Mummies was definately the worst ever though

If you go to public school in California you will get enough black history for 10 lifetimes.

Because if it was just regular American history, people would complain that it WASN'T in a special division.
At least you have a month dedicated to your race. I don't

well when i was in high school, my history book had like 3 or 4 chapters just about black people and how evil and horrible white people are, i actually got pretty annoyed at it so now i don't even give a crap about black history, i guess i feel this way by just the way it was portrayed to me, it just sounded like a bunch of whining, no offense
