1. The soul of a person in the home might be "caught" in the mirror and snatched away by the ghost of the deceased.
2. Due to the supposed presence of the angel of death, those seeing their reflections might place their own lives in jeopardy.

All windows should be opened at the moment of death so that the soul can leave.
The soul of a dying person can't escape the body and go to heaven if any locks are locked in the house.

At funerals, mirrors are often covered because it was believed that the spirit of the recently deceased could become trapped in the mirror and it would then be prevented from moving on to "heaven". This is just one of several superstitions involving mirrors. Another common happening at funerals is the placing of coins on the eyes or in casket to help pay the deceased way to the next world.

Never bathe in stagnant water.

Never wash your hands in a sink meant for washing dishes.

Always bathe after attending a funeral, coming anywhere near the deceased, or being near a mother in childbirth.

Never wear gold in a cemetary. It's seen as flaunting your earthly wealth to the deceased.

Never place a hat on a bed. Probably came from the days when fleas and head lice were rampant.

Never draw a sword in a house. Sounds sensible.

Never pass a chair over a table.

If your broom falls over, expect company.

A sprig of St. John's Wort tacked above the front door will keep Mamioro (evil spirits that cause sickness and madness) away. Actually, St. John's Wort is a powerful charm against all evil.

If someone "stares daggers" at you or gives you a jealous or envious glance, it is the Evil Eye. Most of the time people don't even know they're doing it. The Evil Eye can cause Marime' (spiritual taint, bad luck) to be attracted to you, so step to the side "out of the way", spit to the left, speak the name of Jesus under your breath, or cross your fingers.

Every new home should have an old shoe encased inside the walls to ensure prosperity for all the families that will live there. For most of us, our homes will outlast us. We never stop to think about that, but our homes are borrowed, rented. They're never really ours, unless we have them torn down in the event of our deaths. Leaving an old shoe, leaving a piece of yourself, ensures that the house's future occupants have someone watching out for them, even if it's from a great distance.

Never lean a sword against a wall or furniture with the tip pointed upwards. Spirits could hurt themselves on it and come looking for vengeance.

There are hundreds more, but my fingers are getting tired, hehe

In Greece they still cover the mirror with sheets. They do that because if they don't, it is like there is more than one dead in the house, which means that another dead person will be in the future.
Another thing that they do is that a few women stay with the dead person all night to cry for him. Nowdays, they just sit around him and talk about the dead's life.
Also, when it is the time to burry him, his family put with him things that he was using during his life for example. his comb, pen, his tissue, his favourite book etc.

Mirrors and pools of water are portals to the other side. The dead person might try to get back home through the mirror.
That's why mirrors and still pools are used for scrying.

I think it's because they thought the spirit of the dead person would see it's reflection in the mirror, get distracted, and not go to heaven or something? It's something like that.
