What does his contract say? When were payments supposed to be made? If you don't get paid, do you still work? I know I don't.

Depends if you have a contract with him, and what the terms of the contract are. If there is no contract, then it is usual for the biulder to be paid as the work progresses.

Would you work for nothing.I know for certain I would not.I had an extention built & had to pay so much up front to cover materials
then at different stages of work,outstanding amount paid on completion.

Obviously, not only he can stop working but he can put a lien on the property.

Is he self employed and what was your agreement with him? You will have to pay him for what he has done but not for what he has not.
