It is a certification level. You have to take tests and prove your competence at that level. If you already have ASL skills, you can be put on a list for jobs that don't require certification such as working for a job training center. If you need to be a medical signer or a interpreter for a student in school, you need 4 years of schooling, 2 years of every day use that is documented, and then you get the "Big Degree".

Interpreters have to take tests and the results are given in levels. Different jobs require different levels, so a high school interpreter job might require a different level than a job at a college or business.
