Probably a really odd question here but my husband is 23 years old and has some schooling for trade welding. So far he has had some pretty low paying jobs and we know the pay could be better. Recently he got a job through a temp agency making 10.50 an hour and they laid him off for several weeks- he gets 40 hours a week tops on a good week (which we haven't seen in many weeks!) That job is 15 minutes away from home and he has plenty of time to spend with his family. However we are borrowing money by the time the week is out to pay bills and feed our family. With him working this job I could get a part time job but I have no schooling and no special skills so it would be a junk job maybe $100 a week or so.
Yesterday he got a call from a place offering him a new job for $12.25 an hour 70 hours a week (10 hour days). We would have more than enough to pay all of our bills and have good groceries in the house. This job is 45 minutes away. This place makes parts for US military equipment.

so I doubt there would be many lay-offs. Which job would YOU choose?

Not a lot of options except TAKE IT. Be sure to research the company to make sure they are on solid ground, and have good management, if you can get that info. Also, check the parking lot, if most of the employees have good cars, people have been getting raises and not layoffs.
Talk to your tax person, maybe you can get the earned income tax credit, to reduce your tax to 0$.

Honestly, you're husband has family to think about. Personally, I'd take the 70 hours a week. Why? Because, it seems to pay well and right now his family is in dire need before you two get into debt really badly.

After a while of being in the job, and IF you save up money instead of spending it all, then there's always the possibility of finding a job to give more family time.

Skills or not, you can still flip burgers and if you make manager...that pays pretty darned good for most I've seen. The thing is, even if it's a junk job...it can still be save up money, plus the fact that you have something more to put on a resume. Work your skills up bit by bit, oh..and don't forget the skills you already have...like computer skills, otherwise you wouldn't be using yahoo. :) I'm guessing you can type? Put that down too. Do you speak another language, even if only a few sentences...that helps as well. I've used American Sign Language for years and though I'm not fluent, I can communicate ok when needed.

Any decision is a tough one when you are talking about the difference between spending time with your family and being able to provide for your family. If I were in your situation, I think my vote would go for the military parts job, because it is permanent (not a temp agency), the pay is higher (to compensate for gas and the drive time) and the amount of hours he will be working probably won't fluctuate as much as his current position. Also, his temporary lay-off could turn into a permanent one, in which case he would be looking for work again. If he accepts the new position, he can always look for something else (even with the temp agency again) if he decides that it is not his cup of tea. It's a good idea to look at non-temp employment because the benefits are usually better (medical, dental, vision, life, and ad&d insurance). But, make sure you take into account how much he will be gone... A 45 minute commute to work is hard to get used to, but it is do-able. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Take the Job !! He is 23 years old, he can work hard right now. Fathers or Husbands are suppose to be the "bread winners." I am not saying sit on your butt and do nothing, but stay home and take care of your house and family the way you are suppose to. That's a lot of work already !! If he doesn't take the job, then find yourself a part-time or full-time position around your neighborhood. So you don't have to travel a lot !! Believe me even if it's $100 a week. $100 is something !! And don't under estimate yourself. Now a days even if you have some sort of degree, people can't find jobs. Plus all these little offices or business around your area will be willing to train you. You can do whatever you want and as long as you stay focused. But to be honest, no matter what he does, you should try to find yourself a job either way, you'll help him out more and you both will me financially stable. If you can't work because you have younger kids then that's a different story.
Good Luck !!

take the the job that pays more and has steady income and hours. 45 minutes is not far at all. If you have to maybe move but i dont see you having to do that bc if you make 12 25 that should cover the cost of gas and things. You also could get a job too to help out even if he takes the job. So you could make sure that you guys have spending money or emergency money. He will have time to spend with the children (if any) and he will have time to spend with you i am sure. For right now you guys need to be on solid ground. You sound like my family which mine is not on solid ground right now either we borrow money also to pay bills if my husband was offered a job that pays 12 25 instead of the pay he gets now which is the same that your husband gets paid i would tell my husband to jump on it. so we could get on solid ground. If the hours do become a problem or the job does maybe after he works there after awile he can quite or cut his hours back little bit. Let him get his foot in that door and see how it is. If anything else it will get you guys on solid ground which you guys need to be right now.
GOOD LUCK.

By law can he work 7 days a week & 10 hr days?
I think if the job is legit to take it save up some money & pay the bills, etc. This doesn't have to be a life long job; he could just work there until you have enough saved up & then get a job that's less demanding & maybe you could get a part-time job too.
How old are the kids? If they're not in school yet, then you should probably wait until they all are before you get a job, because daycare is expensive.

YES! He should definitely take it. The extra money would be enough for him to commute, although I would consider moving, as you have no job-ties to the place you currently live. 45 minutes is not really that far to see your friends and family, and you will be expanding your network of friends. 5 years from now, you will regret letting this opportunity go if things continue as they are. Trust me, you do NOT want to be caught in a cycle of debt. Even if he were to find a good job down the line, you would spend a lot of time trying to pay off old loans.

I think the new offer of $12.25 an hour is great for your family. A 45 min ride is not that much. Feeling he's supporting the family will make him feel better and that means better quality time and a happier marriage. From me Good Luck to him in his new job!!

Take the job. It may be hard for a while but the job experience could land him a better job in the future. In the meantime, you could look for a job and by the time you get settled and pay is coming in regularly he could start looking for a different job. Or he could work his way up the ladder and make a real career for himself at this place, with seniority, vacation and less hours.

Take the job. 7-10's gets old fast but at least you have a chance to get ahead a little. Thats still pretty low pay for a welder. My son's 23 years old, journeyman plumber makes $25/hr. I would think a welder is equally skilled.
