I am skeptical. College coaches rarely have success in the NFL. Steve Spurrier was one of the best college coaches ever but had no success in the NFL. The Falcons still have problems with Vick and the receivers (except Crumpler). I just hope Petrino doesn't fall into the trap that Jim Mora did where Arthur Blank demanded he play Vick when Vick clearly wasn't getting the job done and Matt Schaub was on the bench. If Petrino calls his own game and plays whom he thinks are the best players, he might be successful. He needs to have control over the draft too.

No because the owner seems committed to Vick. I think Vick is not the same athlete as he was a few years ago and while still a potent offensive weapon, he has shown repeatedly bad decision making. Petrino won at Louisville against some pretty bad teams if you take the time to look at the schedule. The NFL is so competitive you can lose to any team if you don't perform well each and every week. I think Petrino has a good offensive mind and may improve the Falcons but the owner appears to me a little too "hands-on" and committed to Vick for Petrino to be successful. In other words, I think Vick needs to go via the trade route and Petrino should get the QB he wants/needs to make the Falcons offense work. My prediction is Petrino is gone is 2 years without success.

I like Petrino and think he CAN be successful if he adapts to the NFL mindset of the prima donna players, not the least of which would be Michael Vick!...Vick and the Falcons are NOT going to change for him!...The players don't get fired when the players act up...The players don't get fired when the players pout!...Coaches do and the players KNOW this!...Why should they care if the pay check doesn't bounce?

Saban, Spurrier, Lou Holtz and many other college coaches didn't adapt well because THEY couldn't change!

The NCAA offenses and defenses may work in the NFL but the mindset and the way you deal with players is different!...THAT is what destroyed the good college coaches like Holtz and Spurrier!

Petrino has the offensive mind to be very successful in the NFL...He has got to find someone to play line to way Vick wants to play!...A stronger defense will help too!

As usual, Assistant coaches will be the make or break...If he surrounds himself with competent NFL assistants who can deal with those same prima donnas, he'll do very well!

Tell him for me that his assistants will make or break him if you see him!

The odds are against him. College coaches coached tend to have an adjustment period to NFL life. Theres the fact that NFL talent level- especially defense, is far above college. College coaches are used to having complete control over player management which is not very common in the NFL. Then theres player attitudes and issues because these are paid professionals, not student athletes.
But i think his biggest challenge will be figuring out Micheal Vick. For far too long Vick has been coached to depend on his legs too much. Petrino should show vick old films of Joe Montana and Steve McNair. Those guys knew when it was time to run and when it was time to pass.

I think if Petrino comes up with an offensive package that can utilize Vick's strengths, and doesn't try to turn him in to something he's not
the Falcons will be successful. They also need to go after some WR's this offseason.

History says no, but I think it depends. I think if He build his offense around Vick's strengths then he will have shot. Mora employed the West Coast style which in my opinion is the worst possible offense for Vick. West Coast is to dependent on accuracy from your QB and Vick is definitely not accurate.

Build around Vick's speed and arm strength and pick up a few WR's that can catch and I think Atlanta can compete for a SuperBowl. But if Patrino goes in with a "my way or the highway" mentality and tries to force a system that's not tuned to Vick's strenghts then he will ultimately fail.

He can. I don't think he will because management is too oppressive, but Petrino is a very good coach and I think he can. I also will predict here (I said it first!) that Jerious Norwood will run for 1,500 yards under Petrino next season. Petrino is very dependent on a good power/speed ground game to open up passing, I also think that by the end of next season Matt Schaub will be starting (if they re-sign him that is)
