A member of my state senator's staff was very helpful to me in dealing with a screwup in Lansing and Detroit. How can I legally thank him? Can I mail or send a bottle of whisky to his office?

Shipping alcohol can get messy legally. There are also ethics rules that he might have to adhere to that could make acceptance impossible. And unless you know FOR SURE that you're shipping something appropriate (what if he's a recovering alcoholic or has religious objections to alcohol?) then alcohol is best avoided.

A nice thank-you note would be the most appropriate response. Send it to his boss.

I agree with Bostonian. Most state workers are subject to a "gift ban" which usually prohibits them from taking anything from a client or constituent in exceess of something like $10. Plus, mailing alcohol can get messy.
How about, as suggested, sending a thank-you and inviting the guy over for a drink some time, if the senator is ever out doing constitutent relations or campaigning?

Send it to Ted Kennedy instead.

Don't give it to Ted Kennedy to pass on, or it will never make it unopened.
