First of all, my answer is no. You're probably thinking of the humanitarian side. The vast portion of leather does not come from animals that are killed just for the leather. Almost all of it comes from animals slaughtered for their meat. The skin is a by-product. It can either be used or thrown away. Which would you advise ?

They might when people stop eating beef but as that will never happen I think leather will always be used.
It would be a shame not to use it if it is leftover once the meat is taken so it's better to use it than not at the moment.

One day someone will come up with something better that's cheaper. For as long as people are eating beef and hamburgers, they'll be leather.

I already did.
I decided I wasn't going to eat animals because I don't think it's ethical to kill them. Leather is part of the profit from killing them, so it makes sense to me to avoid that too.
But it's a personal choice. I guess if you ARE going to eat animals it is more ethical to use all the scrap material like the hide, sinews and bones too rather than letting them going to waste. I don't like waste.

not as long as people continue to eat cows.
I eat beef and wear leather shoes jackets - but I draw the line at animal furs , crocodile skin etc
