UGGHHHH!!!
I hate that people write about him but they can't take the time to spell his name right. It's Mark MCGWIRE.
The Hall of Fame is basically a place to enshrine the greatest players in the history of baseball. It immortalizes a player's accomplishments forever.
And the debate is that some people think McGwire should be a Hall of Famer and many don't. The issue everyone keeps bringing up is that McGwire supposedly (nothing was ever proven) used steroids.
The real fact of the matter, and I believe this is how most sports writers (the one's who vote for the Hall of Fame) feel about the situation, is that McGwire wasn't all that great of a ballplayer. He hit 583 homeruns and that's about it. He didn't do anything else outstanding in his career. His career batting average is a middling .263. He won the Rookie of the Year award and he won one Gold Glove award for his defense.
Overall he didn't deserve to be elected into the Hall of Fame on his first try, eventually he will probably get in, but he's not a first ballot Hall of Famer.

Because it's baseball the greatest and most difficult sport ever invented . It's America's invention and it's national pasttime.
Unlike many other sports halls of fame those enshrined at Cooperstown are not good or even very good no they truly must be great, they also must exhibit good character, intergrity and sportsmanship. Raw numbers are not enough for enshrinement.
If you follow some of the argument on this forum you will see many questions about why a very good players such as Don Mattingly or Keith Hernandez are not in the HOF .Very good is not good enough; greatness is required.
The reason that Mark McGwire evokes so much discussion is this :
I was lucky. I grew up in NYC.
My first visit to Yankee Stadium was August of 1959. It was for my sixth birthday . Mantle was in center and my father and uncles compared him with Joe D . A typical day at the Stadium guys comparing past ballplayers they had seen to present ballplayers they are watching now. To this day you can find guys at Yankee Stadium who witnessed
Lou Gehrig's 1939 farewell speech.
Granted they're like 80 years old but they did hear it live.
The same type of conversations goes on in the arks and the taverns of the old baseball towns; Boston, Chicago, Detroit, St Louis ,Pittsburgh , Philly et al.
Accurate and valid statistics are the currnecy of baseball. The soundness of of the currency is what allows me to compare Damon to Mickey Rivers to Mantle and then Joe D.
Mark McGwire and the Steroid Boys - a great name for a bad group - in effect create an infl
ationary situation and the currency loses it's value.
Without knowing the true value of something we cannot determine what it is actually worth.

When you reach the Hall of Fame, it means you are one of the elite. One of the absolute best. You are honored and recognized and immortalized for your accomplishments in the game. Although the standards have become a bit relaxed over the past decade or so - there are some players there now who don't deserve to be - its still something every player strives for and very few achieve. Out of all the players who have ever played, only a couple hundred have made it to the Hall.

I don't know why baseball players care that much unless they can somehow make money off it. Having it on your resume must be good. I do not think anybody that took steroids should be in the hall of fame because they cheated.

What so big? You're kidding me right? It's one of the biggest achievments in baseball, if not the biggest. It's equivliant to being inducted into the football, hockey, basketball, and any other sport hall of fame.

The Hall of fame of baseball is the Pantheon for baseball fans, that is why.
It is where they turn to worship these God like individuals that have graced the earth with their presents.
Only the pure of mind and body and morals may be counted among the Gods in this holy place.
To me it is absolutely meaningless because I have better things to occupy my time with.
Besides I like Soccer much better anyway.
They play more for the sport and not for the paycheck.
It is a better class of hooligans too.
