My last attempt at this question was deleted for some reason, so I'm trying to reword it so it won't violate guidelines.

When I was a kid in elementary school (over 40 years ago grade 5), in my class one of three things happened when you stepped out of line (listed in order of my preference)

1. Go to the front of the class (in front of all your classmates) bend over and get a whack on the butt with the pointer (about a 3' dowel), the thickness of your pants would determine how much it hurt.

2. The teacher made you go in front of the grade one class and sing a song, the grade 1 students were encouraged to laugh. Most embarrassing to a grade 5 student.

3. Go the the school office and get what they called the strap. The strap was about 2 inches wide, 3/16 inches thick, and about 15 inches long. It was made of a canvas covered rubber belt, and they hit your out stretched hand with vigor. It hurt like hell, and from my recollection, it would be enough pain to make a grown man weep, if hit often enough. Some of the teachers looked like they got much satisfaction from giving the strap.

I think the strap kept kids in line most of the time, but I also know it was commonly used if the teacher just didn't like you (they could always find a reason). It was kind of barbaric.

Not many kids received corporal punishment (I would say less than 5%), but I would still strongly object to it today.

I grew up in a rural area, and during my second grade, they gave out the last paddling in school to a kid from my class. At the time it was truly a last resort, and more for show than anything else.

My teacher routinely smacked our hands with the ruler when some of us would get a little rowdy. Consequently, our class didn't act up a whole lot, and we had the highest grades in the school. (the other second grade teachers did not use corporal punishment)

If I might opine for a moment: I was one of those "class clowns" back in my school days. I was always paying more attention to making someone laugh than I was to my studies, particularly math since I hated it so. In her class however, I got straight A's in all subjects because my butt was firmly planted in the seat with my eyes on the blackboard at all times.

I'm not saying we should bring back the paddle or the ruler....It does seem that we need to stop handling children and teenagers with such kid gloves.

Yeah. I went to an Christian school during my elementary school years, and the principle had a thick white belt, that she used on the children as punishment for doing bad things. It actually worked because all of the students were afraid of getting hit by the belt, that no one ever did anything wrong. The fear of the belt caused the students to behave.

In fact, none of the students who attended the school were negatively effect by the act of punishment. At least 80-90% of the students have went on to graduate from prominent universities and colleges and have successful careers. In addition, all of these students are African-American.

I consider the first reaction... Why might want to you want to specify that on an emergency variety??? it really is a provided that college crew shouldn't "beat" a student. Does your son have any markings on his body from the thrashing? Markings could be documented by way of police or well being facility crew, and a report will be forwarded on your county's human amenities organization. I advise taking the boy to the police, and allow him tell his tale. be particular the police image any marks. The police can commence up criminal expenses accurate this second. you want to do some thing in the previous some different person receives damage.

Once in the first week of school for getting lost. I was hit with a trainer. And twice at high school for taking the school roof as a shortcut. That was with a cane.

No, really, I did. Of course, I am really old. They wouldn't do that now. However, I can think of a few kids I know who could use it, and I can't think of one time I got it and didn't deserve it.

A recent study showed that something like 90% of CEOs were "paddled" (can you say that on Y/A?) as children, and it obviously didn't have much ill effect on them, did it?

You mean like having your knuckles rapped on by a wooden ruler? Yes, when I was in the second grade. I still remember it, I think I am mentally scarred.
