Not so much shocking as intense. I've seen a lot of scenes in movies that were more shocking, but those movies were nowhere near as intense as it was in this one.

The movie depicts the events as we have read in the bible. However, with the movies today we see a more realistic setting compared to movies of the past. The agony that the movie portrayed, seemed so real that it puts us in touch with how it might really have been in Jesus' time. So, although we've read many times about the harsh treatment that Christ received during and after His arrest and trial, seeing something so close to the real thing in the movie, seems to shock us, even now.

It's shocking because it is a true story and I believe, accurately portrayed. It is the story of God's Son...imagine that. I cried, along with everyone else in the theatre. Jesus is coming soon!

As far as the torture...no...not shocking but more along the lines of revealing what it must of looked like had one actually eyewitnessed the event. Fiction vs non fiction.....sometimes the two are one in the same.

I would say they are pretty graphic independent of the character portrayed in them. "Believers" probably feel that it magnifies the shock because of their dogma.

mel gibson did it that graphic on purpose because that is how brutal jesus was really treated. No i have not seen ANYTHING that bad in any movie ever or since. it really makes christians cringe & cry to know this is what jesus went through for us so we wouldn't have to.

passion of the christ. teh scurging of christ by the roman guards was very disturbing, but i think in general teh reason is that, at least for me, ti was very hard to watch a very well doen depiction of my lord and savior being punished like he was and to see waht he must have gone thru tos ave me from eternal damnation
