myspace.com is a great place to meet people online. Just type in your friend name in and if he has a account then he or she will show up and you can add ANY one as a friend but they have to accept you as a friend. Try it some time.

we've plenty of instant messaging service this days.
it's simple & easy too. so just go to one of the chatrooms, register if you have to, then start chatting.
for best result, try chatting private to individual members rather than chatting on main chat.
