Freedom is something that takes place in your mind is it not. I'm just tired of everyone saying that people are fighting for my freedom and the freedom of others. I live my life the way I wish regardless of the cosiquences. I dont brake the laws out of fear of incarcerartion but because they are in line with my own personal morales.
So again why do people say freedom isn't free.

Freedom isn't a mindset. Freedom is the ability to do whatever you want whenever you want. The United States has the most freedoms than anywhere else on Earth. Take "freedom of speech" for example, Americans can criticize the President of the United States all day long if they want. Depending on the country, citizens criticizing the leadership of their particular country could be considered a death wish. Look at China. Look at North Korea. Look at Iran. Look at Iraq, when Saddam was in charge. All of those countries are prime examples of places where the concept of free speech simply doesn't exist.
Having the freedoms that Americans have didn't come without a pricetag. Solders fought the wars that needed to be fought in order to protect American interests, i.e., our freedoms. During the revolutionary war, American solders fought against the tyranny of England. England was trying to rule the original colonies from thousands of miles away. Americans back then were taxed unfairly. English solders lived in colonists' homes, whether the colonists wanted the English solders there or not. Americans basically were treated as second-class English citizens.
You have to look at American history throughly to fully understand what I'm talking about. Read the Declaration of Independence.
Americans back then, not so much now, believed that GOD gave humanity certain unalienable rights (i.e. freedoms). We believe that these rights should not be infringed upon.
Read up on your American history, the declaration of independence, and the constitution...then you'll know.
Added:
Ghandi was tolerated by the government there because he was never taken seriously by the government...the governement saw him as some sort of religious-nut that kept people from rioting against the government.
Added:
That's all fine and good that you would speak out regardless...I'm just saying that at least when you speak out here, you can live long enough to tell your grandkids about it...China...North Korea...not so much.
Added:
American freedoms are American rights (check the constitution), but it's also a priviledge that we fight for everyday...this remains true whether we're fighting our own government because of say, for example, some gun control legislation, or terrorist organizations abroad. We still have to protect our American rights. So...yes...there is a cost...and BTW here, an American wouldn't lose their tongue because he spoke out against the President.

There are those that would take your freedoms and have you serve them or their ideas. What you have to remember is that your freedom was bought with blood, sweat and alot of tears long ago. Think of it this way: Do you lock your car door? Do you lock your house or apt door? Why? No honest person will bother your stuff. There will always be those that want to take your stuff. Your stuff may be a TV, radio or freedom. They do not think the way you do. They may be only thinking of themselves, or they may rationalize there dominance as being good for you. I'm not stating any opinion on the current world situation in the middle-east. People don't change much. From the moment someone had something someone else wanted it. They could work toward it. Or, they could just take yours.

Many people have died to give you the freedom you enjoy today. I've never considered freedom to be a place in my mind. For me, freedom is waking up everyday and deciding how I want to live my life... from what I say to the religion I chose to practice without there being any consequences for my decisions. You said that the laws are in line with your own personal morals which is great; however, you might not be as lucky in another part of the world. We are blessed to have the men and women of the armed forces protecting us and our freedoms everyday.

Freedom isn't about doing whatever you want whenever you want, its about being responsible for each other and helping one another. You can't do that in tyranny you have to protect yourself all the time and can't trust anyone.
If you never lived in tyranny, or been in a country were there is only certain places your allowed to go or you could get killed if you did, you wouldn't even question that quote. Our country has been free for a long time, if it starts not caring about the rest of the world it will die a horrible death.
When you don't care your not really free your living in your own prison of selfishness.

because freedom is not a state of mind but rather a state of being. effected upon by outside influences (i.e. morals) but if you are deprived of this you can't just imagine it and have it back. people since the beginning of time have fought for it at every level from pre-k scuffles to world wars. freedom is a privilege. you should read George Orwell's book 1984

if you lived in...let's say,Syria,North Korea,Cambodia,El Salvadore, you certainly would not be living the life the way you wish without cosiquences(sic).then again, maybe you would, but you wouldn't be on yahoo because there are no computers in their jails for inmate use,nor are there computers in the bottom of a shallow grave.
there is a price for being free.that is why freedom isn't free.

You have those Freedoms because someone paid the price in money and blood .
Thay's not a British, German ,Soviet,Japanese Flag flying in front of the Post Office or court house.
It's your flag, the American Flag, a few million graves got filled early to keep it flying.
So you got it free but a lot of someones paid the price.
What price are you willing to pay to keep it?
Would you die to give it to your children?
Or would you let your children go to the slave pens of some conquerer?

Every second a life is in the balance..you can not place a value on that. But for the accountants in the crowd every second is another mega buck. For the psychology major there is a lot of post trauma
work to be paid for by someone(taxpayers who foot disability bills)..let alone the anguish to those involved..again how can you put a price on that.
Who would think it is FREE is leading a traumatic fairly tale life.

You see, but you do not see, Freedom is also your ability to live your life how you wish, that can be taken from you, so our soldiers are fighting to prevent freedoms from being taken from you. Hence freedom is not free.
Please stop using the slavery excuse, you obviously no very little of its end in the United States.

freedom is not free! M any have died so that you have the privilege to your own opinions and your own personal morals. How can you have the audacity to even think that every freedom you enjoy was not paid for with some hero's blood. Americans have always bled and died for self satisfied individuals like you!
