...if you were in a long term committed relationship with someone you love, but then you meet a perfect stranger who you KNOW and feel in your heart is your soul mate?

That is an interesting question because whenever you meet someone there is a possibility that you will or will not have chemistry with them. Whether you act upon the connection you feel is another matter entirely. After you have been with a partner for any length of time, unsuprisingly, things become a little stale and formulaic. Of course you love your partner, but there does seem to be a fundamental human drive to look for something "better". Novelty is exciting because it taps into your passionate side. There is nothing more invigorating and fun as getting to know a new person because you discover all the wonderful things you have in common. But while that is happening you unfortunately fail to see all the little niggly things that will drive you up the wall. Whether or not this person is your "soul mate" depends on your definition of this mythical creature. At the end of the day though in my experience people are just people, they all have their good points and their bad ones too. If you are in a stable loving relationship with someone who cares for you and there isn't anything wrong with that relationship apart from the paintwork is looking a little bit tatty, perhaps before you embark on this treacherous road it would be better to think about ways of adding some spark back into your existing life rather than looking somewhere else for it, because in a few years time you might find yourself in the same situation all over again. It's a real dilemma and I'd be interested to know what you end up doing. Take care.

your question is full of contradiction...
long-term committed relationships don't end when one party meets a total stranger

i do believe in soul mates - maybe this is or isn't yours (only you know), but the very idea means your aren't in a relationship as you stated.
your partner needs to know.
no one deserves to be a place holder, while their "partner" searches...
maybe you guys can figure it out.
maybe you tell the truth and take off with the stranger.

be enlightened, always happy and honest

Just ignore it. I've been married a long time and I run into people all the time who are a great temptation. Love comes and goes - there's not just "one soulmate" out there for everyone. There are lots of them!! If you got hooked up with this one, another would come along again eventually. That's why people get married over and over again.

Go with the stranger. This happened to me when I was 22 years old, and I should have gone with the stranger, he was and always will be my soulmate. I think about him alot more than I should.

I would do nothing.

I don't believe in soulmates. I thought every long term relationship I had was my soulmate.

Don't throw away years of love with your boyfriend for something that isn't even a sure thing!

The grass is always greener on the other side. I would stay with the person I was in the relationship with.
