I discover stupidity and slick salesmanship by ignoring textbook logic. Those who claim they are being logical are usually arranging their proofs to omit key factors. For example, "Higher wages mean higher prices for the consumer" omits the fact that they can also mean lower profits for the fatcats and the same prices for the consumer.

Also "begging the question," which is not pointed out often enough. The most famous, but suppressed, example is Marbury v. Madison, where the Supreme Court interpreted the Constitution as giving it the right to interpret the Constitution. So "critical thinking" is usually a false method. It is a fraud designed to make illegitimate self-interest sound intelligent and necessary.

I try to read articles that look at both sides of any issue, even if i already favor/oppose the issue at hand.

Look for ways the writer/speaker may have a political agenda. And try to find out a little about the person who did the writing.

Critical thinking is the natural process of a curious mind and requires no direct intention.
