Sure - try some of the early Pink Floyd songs that Syd Barrett wrote, or some of the songs on Syd Barrett's solo CDs. "Effervescing Elephant" is quite fun, and "Baby Lemonade (both on "Barrett") will have your classmates wondering where you found such original music.

I'm a fan of The Tragically Hip. I've always liked the lyrics to "Nautical Disaster":

I had this dream where I relished the fray
and the screaming filled my head all day.
It was as though I'd been spit here, settled
in, into the pocket of a lighthouse on some
rocky socket, off the coast of France, dear.

One afternoon, four thousand men died in
the water here and five hundred more were
thrashing madly, as parasites might in your
blood. Now I was in a lifeboat designed for
ten and ten only, anything that systematic
would get you hated. It's not a deal nor a
test nor a love of something fated. The
selection was quick, the crew picked and
those left in the water got kicked off our
pantleg and we headed for home.

Then the dream ends when the phone rings,
you doing alright he said it's out there most
days and nights, but only a fool would
complain. Anyway Susan, if you like, our
conversation is as faint as a sound in my
memory, as those fingernails scratching on
my hull.

They are a really great band with a great lyricist (Gordon Downie). Easily one of my top 10 favorites. I posted their site below. There are lots of their lyrics in the discography section. Maybe you'll find something you like better.

Good Luck!

"What To Do" by The Ziggens. This is a very cheerful song, so if you were looking for a kind of happy poem this would be it. If you're looking for somethink more serious, try "Nothing In My Way" by Keane. It's a very beautiful song, and Keane's lyrics are always very mysterious, like a poem.

another brick in the wall if you really want to spite your teacher;
one (by U2, not the one by metallica) if you want to give everyone a go at trying to figure out who or what exactly those lyrics are about (no one ever knows) - same for the cranberries' zombie;

and my personal favourite - follow me, by rory gallagher. Some lyrics!

Magarthur Park-by Richard Harris (the original Harry Potter movie Dumbledore)

It's poetry...it would be interesting to see how others would interpret it

"Brothers in Arms", by Dire Straits.

What the heck, it worked 22 years ago for me, and the lyrics are still relevant today.

Read them at http://www.ada.com.tr/~modabasi/dslyr5.htm#9

Good luck. I got an "A".
