I really wanted a Dyson vacuum, but didn't want to spend the $500 on a new one. So we settled for a Eureka 5892AVZ Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum, and I'm glad we did. The first time we used it, the vacuum sucked up so much dirt, we had to empty the can 4 or 5 times for just the living room and hallway. I was embarrassed our floors were that bad before. I recommend it for a good vacuum on a budget!!

I have an iRobot Roomba Discovery. I love it. It cleans my carpets better than any other vacuum that I have ever owned. It is bag less, so there are no messy bags to deal with. It cleans by itself, while I do other things, and it gets under beds and furniture where other vacuums cant go. It gets up pet hair and kitty litter like nobodies business. You must move wires and cords, just like with a regular vacuum. To get the best cleaning possible from your Roomba you should clean the brushes regularly. Most of the Roomba models now come with a brush cleaner, but if your doesn't, you can order one for less than $5.00. If you have pets I would recommend the Roomba Discovery for Pets. My Roomba is the BEST house cleaning product that I have ever owned. The Roomba is a little more expensive than other vacuums, but I think it is worth it.
Also, the Roomba is excellent for handicap or elderly people because you don't have to push a vacuum around.
iRobot has excellent customer and tech support. iRobot web site has an excellent trouble shooting page for common questions. The Roombas all have a 1 year warranty. If you have a problem that they cannot fix iRobot will ship you an in warranty replacement for free. Your in warranty replacement is not a rebuilt robot,it is a NEW robot.

There are so many brands of vacuum out there, it just comes down to personal preference. Kind of like which is better Ford or Chevy. Anyhow, to find the vacuum best for you, need to go to a store such as sears and play with the vacuums that they have on display. My personal preference is one that has a dust container instead of a bag. Have 2 dogs that shed and I vacuum every day, don't want to be changing a bag every few days. A vacuum that has a wand that can quickly and easily come out to get to hard to reach spots. Belts will break, so you need to see how easy it is to change the belt. Love my vacuum, but it is almost a major undertaking to get to the belt. Pick up the vacuum with one hand by the handle, is it light enough for you to use on a regular basis. The best vacuums are the dual motored system, one motor runs the suction, and one runs the beater bar. These vacuums are heavier and pricier, but are more durable. Brand wise most commercial cleaners use the Sanitaire brand vacuum, with the aftermarket brand being Hoover.

The Dyson vacuum cleaners are awesome. They are very light and don't need any self propelling (less things to break). They are kind of pricey, but worth it. The engineering is unbelievable. We purchased the "Animal" product. This vacuum is made to remove pet hair. The best thing about all Dyson product lines is that they don't require any bags NOR ANY FILTER CLEANING!! Simple to empty, just remove container and push a button over trash can, then replace. No filters to brush off between cleanings, and never retains any bad smells like the Hoover wind tunnels.

I have a Rainbow vacuum cleaner. Although I got suckered into buying it by a sleezy salesman I have to say I'm quite satisfied with it. They are pretty pricey but the results are awesome. It has a water basin that collects the dirt so there is no bag to mess with. Also it has a lifetime guarantee
Hope this helps God Bless

I don't know why people post stupid answers like that, except to maybe get the 2 points. Thumbs down to Tim... Sheeez!
P.S. Vacuum is the only word that has 2 "u"'s in a row.
I use a Hoover Wind Tunnel, and am very satisfied with it. I've tried those with the "Vortex". They look cool, but those vacuums usually fall apart after about a year or so. The Wind Tunnell we bought has motion-assist wheels that help pull it along in both directions and makes it easier on my back.

Consistently the Sears brand, of "Progressive" canister vacuums have been very highly rated. To read one review, see info at the below link.

Personally I would recommend Bissel. I use it myself, and just bought it on sale from walmart for about 60 bucks. It's got attachments to use around the house, like on the couch, corners of different things. I don't know if you have animals, but its perfect for getting dog hair off of things like the couch!

I love my Kirby...
It's a shampooer and everything!
Sure it's heavy and you have to take it apart but it only takes my 2 minutes to convert it from the vacume to the shampooer!
They cost a lot but my mom still uses hers from 25 years ago!
I do believe you get waht you pay for! They are not cute or cool looking but who is when they are cleaning house!
