My daughter went shopping with her schoolmate at a department store. Her schoolmate was caught shoplifting. Store security insisted my daughter knew about the steal because she was chatting with the other girl and smiling at the time. He took picture of my daughter, and told her never to step into the store again. We feel she is assumed guity by association, and want to appeal to the store, but not sure how we should proceed. We appreciate any comments.

If all they did was tell her not to return to the store then you should be thankful. Guilt by association is often an unfair characterization but the store hasn't any way of knowing whether she is telling the truth or not. As a parent , I am not surprised that she was chit-chatting away and smiling. That's what girls who shop together do. Unless she was seen putting an item on her person or helping to conceal the item then you are justified in feeling slighted that she was painted with the brush of thief.

Just patronize another establishment. Why would you want to put any more money into the place after the unjust treatment she received. There isn't anything you can say or do unless further action was taken. In this case you might be able to sue them for defamation of character or slander.
Each place of business reserves the right to refuse service and they are within their right to do so. You know that your daughter isn't a thief so let it die or she will soon feel like one.

Just call the store manager and talk to them.

However, the store has the right to refuse entry and service to anyone and they are well within their rights to bar your daughter.
