I'm with Len on this one.
The smell always comes back, maybe not as strong, but it always comes back. One or two spots is one thing, but if you can smell it, I doubt is one or a small spot.
Then there is the problem of the pet/s going back to the same spot.
You can mask the smell, but to get rid of it completely you'd have to replace the carpet.

You should have the carpet professionally cleaned initially, this would insure that all bacteria is removed. They have pretreats specially formulated for urine. The longer urine remains, it can bleach out the carpet. To maintain the carpet, you can mist the area with white vinegar and water. Let set for a few minutes than dab up with white rag. To rid the area of the smell, air fresheners only mask the smell, you need to get rid of the smell. Go to your local janitorial supply store and buy an odor release solution. They are relatively inexpensive, follow the label directions for dilution. Mist over the smelly areas. You will notice the smell more at first, this is because the odor release reacts with the odor and causes it to release its hold on the fiber and to dissipated into the air. We had a cat locked in our office overnight, no matter what we did could not get rid of the smell, we called our janitor down and he used this odor release stuff and the smell was gone right away. Highly recommend you getting some.

There are many products available but most of them only covers up the smell temporarily but none works really great. I'm trying to find the best product. If I can't find one then I will have the carpets replaced.

Having the same problem myself right now. I use drsfostersmith.com to get their product (Clean Away I think. I get the one gallon size) that cuts the odor with enzyme activity. But you can't just pour it on and let it dry out as some are suggesting. I spray it on heavy, about 16 oz, with a spray bottle and let it sit 20 minutes. Then I blot it up.
I have found my pet keeps going back to the same place. As she gets older, it's harder and harder for her to hold it. So I get large "Piddle Pads" from the same source and these have paid for themselves several times now. I just pick them up when she has an "accident" and the floor is dry underneath.
I'm going to get a steam cleaner soon but I love those piddle pads.

Go to your local pet store (Pet Supplies+ or Petco) and buy Nature's Miracle-Its a whaite bottle with red writing. Use it generously on the spot. Let it soak in to the padding and it will dry and the pet will not go back to the same spot. Its an enzyme which kills the bacteria and all.

There is a spray put out by Bissell called (I believe) Pet stain and odor remover. Pretty catchy huh? LOL It's in a maroon colored spray bottle. It works wonders. I sprayed it in my car when a stray tom cat "sprayed" it and I never smelt it again. Have also used it in a travel trailer with dog urine. You won't regret it.

There are products on the market designed specifically for that purpose. They almost all contain an enzyme that breaks down the urine so it can be eliminated. That's about all I know. There!

if it is from a cat the only way is to pull it up and replace it after you have used bleach all over the floor as cat urine stays in the floor for a number of years.
