Because the people that where in Vietnam see the similarities in the political control that made use lose that conflict, also the media played a large roll in that loss, and they are doing the same thing this time around all negative and that is what sells papers and boost TV ratings.

Honestly, we like to compare things to things we already know. it makes us feel better somehow.
But beyond that, I think there is an agenda in choosing to compare it to Vietnam because 1) we failed there and 2) the media thinks they were heroes on that issue in getting us out. So both the media and Bush's opponents, by bringing up the Vietnam comparison, are spinning to the public for their own selfish gain.
I don't see many parallels, really, except that both are unpopular. We won in Iraq, not in Vietnam. We have a functioning, unified government in Iraq, not in Vietnam. We are to the point of trying to rebuild infrastructure in Iraq, I don't think we ever got that far in Vietnam.
The real comparison to Vietnam will be if we actually do pull out before the mission is accomplished. That, and I think in both cases, outsiders were sending support to our enemies (China in Vietnam, and Iran and Syria in Iraq.)

It has some simliarities. It is a quagmire. It is a civil war and American troops are in the middle. The government hasn't figured out how to fix this mess. More of the same is not a solution.

I think the only comparison is that we should never have been in either place. Here we are again policing the world and forgetting about all of the problems we have right here.
