Because a lot of people are afraid that if it's legal, loads of people will end up doing nothing than smoking dope all day, won't be able to function, and will start easier on hard drugs too. However, where I live pot is legal and while I myself don't smoke it, quite a few of my friends do and I haven't seen any of these fears justified... I don't really see much difference in my friends when they've smoked some -far less than when they're drinking even a couple glasses, and alcohol is legal in the US!- and I don't personally know or know of even one person who used to smoke pot and has moved on to hard drugs. So while of course there will be some people who don't know their limits or who move on to hard drugs (but people use harddrugs too when they haven't used pot, so who's to prove the pot is the cause & not some other problem with selfcontrol & responsibility?) but from my experience & what I see around me, pot is less harmful than alcohol.

Because the powers that be can not figure out how to grow it without producing seeds which will end up in someone else's hands and they can't figure out how to keep everyone and their dogs from growing it in their closets, plus they can't figure out how to tax it. I don't know why it's such a big deal anyway, think about it...how many people have been known to committ murder while smoking weed? None!! If everyone in the world smoked, we wouldn't have war, there would be famine, but no war...everyone would be too busy laughing, eating, and then sleeping to worry about picking up a gun to shoot someone else. Besides that, in the Bible it says something to the effect of...I give you all herb bearing plants...Hello, what do ya think weed is?! (it's in the 1st chapter pretty close to the beginning)

Because the government cant corner the market (like tobacco, oil, etc.). People would grow it at home and get it for free. If big corporations (the real government) could corner the market and make you buy pot from them, I guarantee you it would be legal like guns, tobacco, alcohol, oil, burgers, and now even coffee.

Because it's mind altering, and potentially addictive.
The same with alcohol and cigarettes, but for some reason they chose to make exclude pot from that.
It's still the biggest cash crop in the USA

Don't know why but I wish they would make the ciggs illegal and legalize POT instead. Ciggs do more damage to you than POT.

Because it's not truly a "Free Nation" They are controlling us. If we were free, we could do anything that we want as long as it doesn't affect those around us. If someone wants to get high as a kite, it's no problem with me as long as they aren't endangering anyone else. Now, if they are high and driving a car, I have a big problem with that. But as for any drugs, as long as they are only hurting themselves...More power to them.
