Go to the web site of the company that made the laptop and look up the specs, if it doesn't say right on the laptop (mine does).

Doesn't really matter anyway -- a USB 2.0 hard drive will work fine on a USB 1.1 port, it'll just be slower, that's all.

Just connect the hard drive. If the usb port on you laptop is not 2.0 you will get a message stating that this device can work faster. That will pretty much tell you you don't have 2.0.

If you're worried about compatibility, don't. You could check your own USB status via System > System properties > Hardware > Device manager > system devices > USB controllers to see the hardware on your pc. I believe USB2s are anotated with #82801.

check the laptop manual.
if you don't have a manual then simply go to the manufacturer website and download an online copy of the manual.
i've been able to find manual to computers that were manufactured back in 1988 so u may also be successful in finding a manual for your laptop.

A USB2 device will work in any USB1 or 2 port. Just slower in USB1 port. Plug it in and use it.

Plug it in!! If Windows comes up with a message saying 'this device could run faster' you have USB1. It will still work, just not as quickly.

The moment you plug it in, the OS will give you a message if your driver is not USB2 compatible. It will suggest you to update the driver.... if it doesn't, than it's already done.
