Do it at the library. It's common to be afraid when you read Gothic Horror. That's what it's all about. Edgar Allen Poe is good, Frankenstein, and Dracula are all good. I want to know why you're scared to read horror at home? Is there something scary there? In most cases the creepiest thing in anyone's home(okay, aside from the stray ghost here, or there)is their own imagination.Or a younger sibling.

Edgar Allen Poe's stories are excellent - my favourites are The Black Cat and The Cask Of Amontillado.
Yeah, reading in daylight seems like a good idea. I never read horror novels (well, the ones that scare me!) when I'm alone at night time. When I was reading The Shining, I moved back in with my uncle and aunt for 2 days!

Try these - read them in daylight if you're easily spooked !
Bram Stoker "Dracula"
Edgar Allan Poe "The Pit and the Pendulum"
Robert Louis Stevenson "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde"
Henry James "The Turn of the Screw"
Oscar Wilde "Picture of Dorian Gray"

Give J Sheridan le Fanu a go especially Carmilla one of my fave horror stories!! Also try MR James and Algernon Blackwood.
Try reading in daylight hours or with friends and family around you.

Only read horror at home when it's light outside! That's how I have handled it. Maybe at a well-lighted library would be a good alternative location. Places with other people around, but where you won't get too distracted.

I love The Tell-Tale Heart. Wrote an essay about it too. Anyways, you should go to your local library. They should be able to point you in the right direction.

Read just about any of Edgar Allen Poe's short stories. Creepy, yes, but fascinating.
