Yes, but splenda is the only safe one. The artifical sweetners contain stimulants and chemicals that are bad. That's why pregnanct women are NOT supposed to drink diet soda (unless made with splenda like some of the new ones are). The American Acedemy of Pediatrics, the book "Eating Well When You're Expecting" and my doctor all said the same thing regarding that. Good Luck though!!

Yes, it is safe to use, but in moderation. A diet soda a day is not a big deal. I have always heard that out of all the artificial sweeteners on the market, Splenda is considered the best choice because it is made from sugar (a much better choice than aspartame).

I myself am a Diet Pepsi fanatic (usually had a couple a day), but I gave it up cold turkey with both my pregnancies. Once in a while I'll indulge and have one.

When in doubt, ask your doctor.

Sucralose (Splenda) is safe. Aspartame (Equal) is safe. Saccharine (Sweet & Low) IS NOT.

"Splenda is a trade name given to a generic, low calorie sweetener called sucralose. According to the Food and Drug Administration and the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives, sucralose is safe for everyone to consume, including pregnant women."

According to the FDA and an MIT study - Aspartame is SAFE for people to use (including pregnant women) unless you have phenylketonuria - in which case you cannot metabolize the substance phenylalnine.

"Aspartame is made up of two amino acids: aspartic acid and phenylalanine. Amino acids make up proteins. Don't be confused, though -- aspartame is not a protein. The chemical configuration of aspartame is different from that of a protein. When aspartame is digested, it is broken down into aspartic acid, phenyalanine and methanol, substances that can actually be found in "natural" foods. For example, the same substances can be found in milk, fruits and vegetables. Actually, many of these "natural" foods have higher amounts of aspartic acid, phenylalanine and methanol because aspartame is used in such small quantities. Some of the breakdown products may cross the placenta, but studies show that the amount is insignificant, and therefore, determined to be safe."

"Saccharine can cross the placenta barrier into fetal blood, and a fetus is much slower to clear the saccharine from its blood than the mom. So if you are consuming large amounts of saccharin, it may accumulate in the baby's bladder and potentially increase its risk for bladder problems or possibly even bladder cancer."

Splenda is the best for you since it's made from natural sugar products, and is refined in a way that it is not easily absorbed by the body. Stay away from saccharin, and moderate your amount of aspartame, and especially stay away from Sorbitol, but Splenda's just fine.

For you folks who are wondering why use Splenda if you're not trying to lose weight, excess sugars in the diet aren't good for mom or baby either, which makes Splenda (and other safe substitutes) a great idea.

It probably is but as a rule in general you really should reduce the amount of sweetners in your diet while pregnant whether they are natural or artificial. Try your best to eat everything fresh and without added sugar, artificial sweetners, and high fructose corn syrup.

Ask yourself if it's okay to consume chlorine while pregnant or not pregnant?

Steer clear of ANY artifical sweetners - they all cause a host of problems, and they are all toxic. Those who tell you otherwise either have a different definition of what constitutes "healthy", or they're going by the assurances of the industry pocketing their dollars.

My pregnancy book says that Splenda is okay, but discourages any other artificial sweetners.

Splenda is the safest during pregnancy. I use a little everyday myself. You are not supposed to have saccarin (sweet & low) or aspartame (equal) during pregnancy. Keep in mind that aspartame is found in diet sodas as well.

I've used sweetner with both of my kids. I am due to have my second one, and I am assuming that she is ok. My 3 year old is just fine...as sharp as a tac, and no known health problems.

Splenda is OK for use in pregnancy. I'm diabetic and I use it as a substitute for sugar. This was suggested by both my diabeti educator and the perinatologist who is caring for me.

As to the poster who mentioned not losing weight while pregnant. There ARE other reasons for sugar substitutes. Not everyone is obsessed with their weight.
