A visit to the website of most Grand Lodges will tell you everything you ever want to know about it. Masonry is a fraternity that teaches a philosophy of good moral behavior, and teaches you to put God at the center of everything you do. (no specifics are taught or discussed, so that a God fearing man of any religion may be a Mason.) These lessons are taught in "degrees" which are ceremonies that are designed to teach a bit at a time. Once you have proven that you have grasped the teachings of one degree, you are allowed to receive the next. These ceremonies are kept private so that the members can enjoy the experience, and not have it spoiled for him, the same way you dont want to know how a movie ends before you see it. The symbols of the fraternity are mostly the tools used by the ancient and midieval stone guilds. The allegory (like parables; stories told or enacted to make a point) is based upon events or characters in the Old Testament of the Holy Bible. Most of them revolve directly around the building of Solomon's temple. The only secrets are the passwords, signs, and handshakes. These are secret because they help to identify you to other Masons. Every fraternity has these. There is no such thing as "higher levels". The highest that a Mason can go is 3rd degree (Master Mason). A Master Mason may choose to join other Masonic organizations if he wishes, one of which is the Scottish Rite. The Scottish Rite has 29 more degrees (there is where 32nd degree Mason comes from) but they are not higher in rank. Absolutely any Master Mason may receive the 32nd degree if he is willing to pay the fees and dues involved in joining. There is a 33rd degree, which is an honorary degree bestowed upon 32nd degree Masons who have demonstrated an outstanding dedication to the fraternity. Their names are published and they are voted on, so there are no "secret" 33rd degree Masons as some like to claim. Many lodges hold open houses a couple times a year to allow the community to look around the inside of the building, see the lodge room, and ask questions. So, hopefully, this answers your question. Feel free to email me.
Edit: Realized that I really didnt answer your question. A Masonic Temple is a symbolic representation of King Solomon's temple ( the reason it is called a temple). Some are very ornate and large and beautiful, if the lodge had the money to build it, and some are very humble, and bear absolutely no resemblance to anything except a small building.

Freemasonry is an oath bound fraternal order of men which derives from the medieval fraternity of Freemasonry. We adhere to many of the Ancient Charges, laws, customs and legends of operative Freemasonry. We are loyal to the civilian government under which we exist. We inculcate moral and social virtues by symbolic application of the operative stonemasons' working tools and by allegories, lectures and charges. Freemasonry obligates its members to obey the principles of brotherly love, equality, mutual aid, secrecy and confidence. We have secret modes of recognition that permit members to recognize each other as brothers. We require a through examination into the mental, moral and physical qualifications of a petitioner and we admit men into the fraternity by secret ceremonies based in part on legends of the Craft.

Once a person has decided to apply for membership he fills out a petition signed by 2 members of the Lodge he desires to join. He gives the petition to one of the members along with the required initiation fee. The petition is read at the Lodges next stated meeting. The Worshipful Master will appoint an investigating committee to interview the petitioner and these men will report back to the Lodge at the next Stated Meeting. After the report of the investigating committee the petitioner is voted on. by the members attending this stated meeting. Once the petitioner is accepted he is given the three degrees of Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft and then the sublime degree of Master Mason. There are certain requirements a candidate must meet before he can proceed from one degree to the next.

One must obtain the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason before he is allowed to wear any Masonic Jewelry

One must have a belief in a Supreme Being.

The tenets of the Masonic Fraternity are " Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth. "

The Masonic Fraternity is NOT a Secret Society but rather a Society with Secrets. No matter what one has heard the Masonic Fraternity is not Satanic in nature.

Suggest if you are interested in pursuing interest in the Masonic Fraternity and are over the age of 18 you contact a man whom you know is a Mason for a petition and further information. If you are under 18 suggest you contact a Mason and inquire about the DeMolay Organization.

If you are a Lady the Masonic Fraternity offers the Order of Eastern Star if over 18 or the Order of Rainbow Girls or Job's Daughters if under 18. For requirements for joining these Ladies Organizations please contact the local Masonic Lodge or Grand Lodge in the State in which you reside.

If there is no local Masonic Lodge then one can contact the Grand Lodge of Masons located in the State in which one resides.

There is alot that they do for the community. My boyfriend's father has been a mason since he was 18, he is 69 now. Really they do a lot of benefits, fundraisers, etc. They have there dinners and their meetings. Now days it is more for social gatherings and community service. Although it does come in handy to be or related to one. When my boyfriend went away to college he got this great apt. because his father is a mason and so was the owner.
