Look around Traverse City and that region. If Beaver Island isn't privately owned (and I'm not sure), see if you can get something there.
Do NOT go to Macinac Island and that ridiculous grand hotel. It's beautiful, beaucolic, and charming - and it was also the worst, most humiliating treatment (the ONLY humiliating treatment) I have ever received anywhere.
No details, but trust me, it was all on their side (there was no alcohol, violence, or disturbance of any sort involved, and no police - I was never a frat-boy type and I'm just not that kind of guy). I will never, ever set foot there again.

Michigan is great for early summer or early fall. I would go to the West Coast to the Holland area (they have some decent state park beaches). Lots of people go up to Ludington or up to Sleeping Bear Dunes. However Traverse City is by far my favorite area in Michigan. Try there. If you go up to Traverse City Mabel's Table is a good restaurant. Have fun!

Up in the Upper Peninsula is really pretty. Up near Marquette, Michigan it is really pretty. I am considering going to college up there because I love it. Have fun no matter where you choose!

northern michigan is a joy in the summer months --
the traverse city/leelenau bay region is outstanding. just google it and sort through the cabins/lakehouses/condos that are available to rent. search early, as they fill up months or even a year in advance.
if you want to rough it, try camping in the porcupine mountains and keewenaw bay region in the upper peninsula. simply outstanding, i can't recommend it enough.

Traverse City is wonderful. lots of resorts, Grand Traverse Bays, Good dining. It's a larger town, so it's somewhat cosmopolitan, yet still a northwoods destination.
vacationed at Grand Traverse Resort 2 summers ago. Nice.
