I felt the same way you do now, two years ago! I wanted change and I packed up from Cleveland to Wilmington NC. But not before I looked around. I wanted to move by the ocean and have some warmer weather. I checked out the west coast but it was to expensive. South in the Gulf was just to damn hot. Florida was nice but to much tourism. I found Wilmington and it was laid back good weather and on the ocean.
Check out the well known art areas like Austin Texas and Ashville North Carolina. Just figure it out and do it!

One way to narrow your list would be whether there are direct flights from Chicago to the new area. It doesn't seem like a big deal until traveling back to Chicago involves a 8 hours of driving, waiting, flying, waiting, and flying. Another thing important to me is how friendly the people are. It's absolutely dreadful when you move to a city where people are not friendly and unwilling to talk.

Sorry, I can't help with art career advice.

But I do have to say to remember that moving away doesn't always bring you to the promise land. You wake up in the new city the same person, just with fewer familiar face for the first couple years.

So you want a job and want to have fun? Sounds like Dallas! Dallas has many job opportunities. You can easily be an Art teacher for the Dallas School District. Also, it has a lot of things to do specially outdoors. People are warm and friendly. Houses are not that expensive. The weather is wonderful plus it has many lakes. It also has many single, attractive men. If I could I would move to Dallas or somewhere in East Texas. I live in one of the coldest states "Idaho".
Good luck.

A different part of Chicago. I want to move to the subarbs of Georgia away from this boring countryside my husband and I live in but I don't want to leave Georgia. If you want to move to a more exciting part of your state I say move to the city if you can afford it.
