Well, if we break down the sentence:

Sans the "but" we are left with "I'm not afraid....." meaning; *I* am NOT afraid of homosexuals.

That's something that people say when they want to joke or opinionate about gays so phobes will like them but don't want to seem like a bad person incase any homosexuals are listening.

It's actually offensive. It's like saying "I'm not afraid of black people".

It's implies that these groups are dangerous.

It's ignorant.
