The law differs depending on the type of tenancy you have.
If you are in private rented accommodation and you owe more than 8 weeks rent, it is likely that possession will be given and you will be evicted. You can ask the judge to consider allowing you to remain at your current address for a maximum of 6 weeks to enable you to find alternative accommodation.
If you are a council/housing association tenant, you are likely to be a "secure" tenant and will have the opportunity to explain to the judge why rent arrears have accrued and how you intend to pay your current rent plus an affordable amount from the outstanding arrears.
You do not say why you have been unable to pay your rent but if you are receiving state benefits or on a low income, you will be entitled to Housing Benefit to help pay the rent. You can claim Housing Benefit from your council. The sooner you do this, the better. You can make a claim for backdated Housing Benefit for a maximum of 52 weeks if you can show good reason for making a late claim, unfortunately, not knowing that you may be entitled to Housing Benefit is not a good reason for making a backdated claim.
There are a number of further steps you can take to try to avoid eviction. Making some payment towards your rent/arrears immediately will indicate that you understand the seriousness of your situation. Check that you have received a "summons" from the court and not a "notice of seeking possession" from the landlord. If you have received a notice rather than a summons, you have a little more time to try to take appropriate action before possession is sought. Either way, once proceedings have started, court action will go ahead unless you are able to pay the arrears in full.
You need to seek professional help immediately. Contact your local Citizens Advice/Law Centre or Housing solicitor. They will help you defend the eviction and explain further options, rights and responsibilities.
Good luck.

I'm not sure I see the connection between the number if children you have and your failure to pay the rent. The court will not see a link either.
If you haven't come to a deal with your landlord before the court hearing, then you should prepare for a visit from the bailiffs or a fine. Non payment of fines leads inevitably to the glasshouse so maybe get a childminder lined up.

Really there is nothing you can do. I have been in court and even though you have kids I see the judges go by the law and side with the owners. They may give you 2 weeks to get out so I would start looking now. SORRY.

All you can do is plead your case. Sometimes if the judge hears you and you have a logical reason for being behind in your rent, they'll grant you some more time. People always think just because they sue you for rent that they will automatically win but that is so not true.

The Salvation Army is really good about helping out in an emergency situation like yours. If you haven't received that type of help from them before, I would recommend you give them a call. They paid my daughter's rent for her when she was out of work, and then gave her food for her children and paid her electric bill. It certainly can't hurt to try. I hope everything works out for you!

3 children, failing to pay rent. Going to Court. "PAY RENT". Take a good look at yourself, accept that you may need to be responsible. Then, on a very regular basis, keep it up.
