Charles Dickens did not go to debtor's prison. His father, John, certainly did end up in the Marshalsea prison in Southwark becuase of debt which forced Charles to leave school at the age of 12 and start work in a factory. It was his own experiences that he based some of his work upon.

The Charles you might be after could be Manson.

I don't think Dickens was in a debtors prison before he became a writer - except to visit his father there

Are you thinking of Charles Bukowski? Not a "criminal" exactly, though he had his run-ins with the law.

See "Factotum" for a movie about him. It sucks, but it's about him.

You would need more information...the surname is a fake name someone gives to hide their identity, it's not their last name. Such as Samuel Clemmons giving himself the surname Mark Twain.
