No but it will hurt your pocket book. The fines are quite high if you are caught without one. Why do you want to remove it? They have very little restriction to them and removing it will not give you a bump in horse power.

Actually, it could indeed hurt the motor.

The computer might think it's running too rich, thus leaning out the fuel mixture, and a lean fuel mixture can burn a hole in a piston.

It might think it is running lean, and run a richer fuel mixture. Too rich of a fuel mixture can cause problems, such as running rough, flooding, and burning more gas than normal. It can also cause gas to enter the crankcase, which in turn will thin and break down the oil. Inadequate oil lubrication = bearing failure, which means engine failure.

This is all in addition to the fines that you can get. Tampering with emissions control equipment is a Federal violation, and fines are huge if caught.

BTW, if it is plugged, and you are under 8 years 80k miles, it should be covered under the emissions warranty (some are longer, call and ask your dealer).

It won't hurt the motor. You will just have a check engine light for "cat-inefficiency" The readings on the downstream o2 sensor will cause this. Your car may run different because the computer is gonna think that your engine is running too rich.. so it may lean out. There are ways around this, some places sell 02 emulators which plug into the harness or solder into the harness in place of the o2 sensor.

No, it will not pass smog w/o a cat. It may run leaner due to less back pressure but the processor should compensate for it.

no it will not hurt the motor but it will make it run irratic because the motor needs the backpressure.
