No two species can occupy the same ecological niche. Eventually one of them will go extinct. However, what usually happens is that achieve realized niches. For example, two sea urchin species (one in higher elevations, the other in lower ones) can overlap in terms of the places they can grow. Instead of fighting (and risking injury) over shared territory, one just sticks to the higher part, the other the lower part; a border thus forms. Usually, there is always something a little different about niches. For example, 2 predators with the same prey may hunt at different times of the day. This reduces competition and helps both species; it is also a result of evolution.
