Let x = votes losing candidate got
Then x + 220 = votes winning candidate got
So x + x+ 220 = 2x+220 = total votes cast.
So 2x+220=810
2x = 590
x = 295 = loser's votes
x+ 220= 295 +220 = 515 = winner's votes

The way i would do this is.
1. 810 - 220 = 590
This is to get rid of the 220 vote difference between them.
2. divide this by 2 and get 295
this max is the number of votes each would get if there was only 590 people voting because you got rid of the 220 vote differnce
3. 295 is the ammount of votes the loser got
The winner got 295 + 220 = 515 votes
4. Check 295 + 515 = 810

Let v = the loser's votes
v + 220 = winner's votes
v + v + 220 = total votes = 810
2v + 220 = 810 (combine like terms)
2v = 590 (subtract 220 from both sides)
v = 295 (divide by 2)
The losing candidate had 295 votes. The winning had 515.

.
Let the votes received by the winner be x
The total number of votes was 810. So, the number of votes the loser got should be 810 - x.
The winning candidate had 220 more votes than the loser, so,
x - (810 - x) = 220
2x - 810 = 220
2x = 1030
x = 515
Number of votes the winner received = 515
Number of votes the loser received = 810 - x = 810 - 515 = 295

The expression would be:
x(for the losing candidate)+x+220(for the winning candidate)=810
x+x+220=810
2x+220=810
subtract 220 from both sides
2x=590
divide both sides by 2
x=295
so, the loser received 295 and the winner received 295+220=515
Check your work:
295+515=810

this is easy.
X+220= the winner
X= the loser
together they = 810
so
2X+220=810
-220 -220
2X=590
/2 /2
X=295
such that the loser earned 295 votes
while the winner earned 515

Subtract 220 from 810. Then divide by two. That's the answer to the losing candidate.
Then add 220 and that's the answer to the winning candidate.

x is the loser
x+220 is the winner
x+y= 810
so you just substitute y
x+x+220= 810
2x=220=810
2x= 590
x=295
so the loser got 295
the winner is 295+ 220=
515
